C. Edwin Polk, D.D.S., M.S.
2015 started with Dr. Polk teaching for the 17th time for the 2 week advanced orthodontic course sponsored by the Charles H. Tweed International Foundaton for Orthodontic Research. This intensive course includes lectures and "hands-on" laboratory experience. All aspects of orthodontic care are covered from the initial diagnosis, treatment planning, research, to treatment of three different cases. These cases are treated on simulated malocclusion models called "typodonts" that have braces on metal teeth set in a heavy wax base. This allows the orthodontist to move teeth as the wax is heated and softened, allowing the simulation of two years of orthodontic treatment in a matter of three days. Orthodontists and American residents represented 21 countries as students and 16 instructors participated. Dr. Polk is passionate about orthodontics, teaching and sharing his experience with others.
2014 was a busy year for Stillwater orthodontist, Dr. C. Edwin Polk. Besides a busy full-time orthodontic practice, Dr. Polk presented a 40-minute lecture before 200 attendees at the International Meeting of the Charles Tweed Foundation for Orthodontic Research in October. His presentation titled "Forces for Faces" demonstrated that the face is the first aspect in orthodontic diagnosis. Different biomechanical forces are needed to maintain or improve the facial profile with numerous influencing factors.
Year 2013 was also a busy year with 3 hours of lectures for the OU orthodontic residents in March. In April, Dr. Polk was an orthodontic instructor for the 16th time for the orthodontic graduate two week study course of the Tweed Foundation for Orthodontic Research. This course is a very comprehensive course of proven diagnosis, treatment planning and wire bending. The first Tweed Study Course was given in 1941 and is the longest running and most attended orthodontic course in the world. Students from 16 countries were present for the April, 2013 course with 16 instructors from the United States, Italy and China. Dr. Polk is looking forward very much to teaching again in March, 2015.
Dr. Edwin Polk has always been passionate about the profession of orthodontics as is reflected in his approach with his patients. Dr. Polk's practice emphasizes a "hands on" approach to the orthodontic treatment of all of his patients. To maintain the quality of treatment, he sees every active patient at each orthodontic appointment. At the chair he will bend and activate all of your arch wires as well as place and repair your appliances himself. He believes that you deserve to have a board certified orthodontist perform these procedures on you and your family to ensure proper treatment and to achieve an excellent result.
Dr. Polk earned his Master of Science degree (M.S.D.), Magna Cum Laude, in the specialty of orthodontics from St. Louis University Orthodontic School, his dental degree (D.D.S.) from Baylor Dental School and a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University. After completing his orthodontic degree, Dr. Polk served three years in the United States Air Force as an orthodontist in West Germany before establishing his private practice in Stillwater. He is a past president of the Stillwater Board of Education and Stillwater Frontier Rotary Club.
Completing his board certification in 1984, Dr. Polk has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics since that time and in 2002, completed the requirements for recertification (voluntary) for the American Board of Orthodontics.
Becoming board certified is an excellent method to measure the quality and consistency of treatment results. It demonstrates the orthodontist's pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence. It is the only orthodontic certifying board recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association. The greatest benefits come from the in-depth self-evaluation that goes into the years of preparation for board certification.
Through his association with numerous orthodontic organizations, boards and foundations, Dr. Polk has presented programs at several national and regional conferences, four orthodontic courses in France, three lectures in Italy and has published five orthodontic articles concerning diagnosis and treatment. His most detailed article, published in the national journal of the American Association of Orthodontists, is entitled "A New Index for Evaluating Horizontal Skeletal Discrepancies and Predicting Treatment Outcomes". Dr. Polk's latest national lecture was a 40-minute presentation to over 800 attendees titled "Orthodontic Forces for Faces" at the annual meeting of the American Association of Orthodontists in May, 2012.
As a member of the Charles H. Tweed International Foundation for Orthodontic Research since 1976, Dr. Polk became a Postgraduate Course Instructor and Case Examiner in 1981, teaching 16 two-week courses since 1981, with the last course in April 2013 and will and has served on the Board of Directors from 1992 to 1998.
By regularly attending numerous conventions and study groups, Dr. Polk keeps up to date on the latest techniques and determines if they would benefit his patients. In 2009, he became certified in Laser technology and has integrated this technology into his orthodontic practice with great success.
